Hot racing at Blenheim Palace

June 5

Fred and Coaches Oliver and Jacqui took on the famous Blenheim Palace Triathlon this weekend.

The race at Blenheim is over the sprint distance and takes place entirely within the beautiful grounds of the historical estate, with the UNESCO World Heritage site setting a stunning background for events.

Coach Oliver has not raced a sprint distance triathlon for almost three years and this would be a return to the fast and furious racing scene for him. Coach Jacqui has a knee surgery booked for this week and so her aspiration was to enjoy the day and do what she could. Fred, was most excited of all, even though he had no intentions of troubling the timers!

Coach Oliver and Fred set off in the same wave, with Fred having a handicap of 30secs per year in difference from Oliver (30.5 mins) and Coach Jacqui in her own ladies wave, shortly after.

Oliver was first out of the water and then did not see Fred until Oliver was about to begin lap 3 of the bike. The course was undulating in parts with some fast flat parts. Unfortunately, the popularity of the race  and narrowness of the estate roads, means that the course becomes congested quickly and packs form on the bike. Nevertheless, a solid ride saw Oliver head out into the midday sun (like mad dogs and englishmen) on the 6k run. The run is two laps of the stunning lake in front of the house and again undulating.

Oliver was first over the line in a respectable 1:24. Fred, indulging himself in luxury transitions, finished after 2:08. Oliver retaining the intra familiar bragging rights!

Jacqui fought her open water demons in the swim before going on to enjoy her ride around the estate and then pulling the plug on her race after one lap of the run - owing to her knee injury.

The day was rounded off with ice creams - a rare treat!
